On June 30th at 3:00pm the
Miss Puerto Rico Pageant of Rochester will be taking place at the Rochester
Museum & Science Center Eineshart Auditorium. The Pageant is a program for any
young Puerto Rican woman in our community. “The mission of this program is to
help build cultural awareness, values and the self-esteem of the young women in
today’s Hispanic community”, Ingrid Colon, pageant coordinator.
Colon participated in the pageant when she was 16 and 18, winning Princess twice,
said “this an awesome experience that you will never forget”. Winners from the
previous years agreed with this statement as well. The workshops for the pageant
started the first week of February, and go all the way up till the pageant
date. Some of the workshops are the History and Music of Puerto Rico, Zumba for
exercise, Public Speaking classes, volunteer work, as well as attending and
participating in a number of community events. What the judges look for in the
Queen and the Princess is someone who can set an example for the girls in our
community and be a role model for them. Mainly a young woman who is well
rounded, outgoing, good communication skills, and overall a great personality. Contestants
must be between the ages of 14- 17, maintain a C+ average or higher, be at
least 50% Puerto Rican, single, never been married and without children, and enrolled
in school for the entire school year.
